Vision Boards – A Practical Guide to Achieving Your Goals
Despite occasional skepticism, the science supporting vision boards is compelling, with influential figures like Oprah endorsing their impact. Add to that millions of coaches, around the world, plus well respected psychologists. Today, I am throwing my hat in the ring to share with you why vision boards do work and what happened for me.
Grounded in neuroscience
The principle is simple: what you focus on, you attract.
Our evolutionary wiring, where attention to survival needs led to the identification of opportunities, has not changed one iota. Psychologists attest to the fact that the crux lies in the brain’s “value-tagging” mechanism, favouring images over words and lending credence to the power of visual representation. The “Tetris effect” further validates the practice, explaining how viewing your board before bedtime enhances its imprint on your subconscious, which can influence dreams and thoughts.
Still note sure? Consider this – visualisation, taps into a phenomenon exploited by professional athletes for decades. The brain struggles to distinguish between a vividly imagined vision and reality, a nuance that can be harnessed for positive outcomes. Crafting a vision board involves envisioning your goals as if they’re already unfolding, reinforcing a mindset of success.
Your Catalyst for Action
Repetition is a pivotal element. Regular engagement with your vision board desensitises the brain to new challenges, reducing the physiological fear response linked to uncharted territory. Dr. Swart, a respected neuroscientist, underscores the process’s positive impact, creating an emotionally charged space that bolsters the brain’s receptivity to taking measured risks and embracing opportunities.
While vision boards are not standalone miracle workers, they serve as pragmatic catalysts for action. As someone who dares to dream, I’ve had sailing the Italian Riviera on a super yacht firmly on my board since I first made one back in 2019 — and yes it took six years for this vision to materialise but sure enough, it happened. Here are a few snaps from my time on the Italian Riviera in August 2023.
As we embrace another new year, consider crafting your vision board—a tangible, scientifically-backed reminder that your aspirations are achievable with focus, visualisation, repetition, and the courage to seise unexpected opportunities.
To your success!
